Jan and Helena Cwynar were hiding, in Markowa, teenaged Abraham Segal from Łańcut who had introduced himself to them as Romek Kaliszewski from Przemyśl. He was engaged to work as a Pole however after some time the Cwynars realized that he was of Jewish origin. He survived the period of the occupation treated by hosts as the family member. After Russians marching-in in August 1944 he escaped from the house without good-bye. After several years he established contact with the Cwynar family. On Mar. 24, 2004 he, as a representative of Jews rescued by Poles from Markowa, attended the ceremony of unveiling the monument dedicated to the Ulma family. In January 2008 he took part in the conference dedicated to Poles rescuing Jews, connected with the exhibition Righteous among the Nations. Poles’ help for Jewish people in Małopolska within years 1939–1945 organized by the Rzeszów Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN). Although he lives in Israel he has visited his natal environs and inhabitants of Markowa for several years.
